He was a physical chemist and a Dean of the College of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley.
The terms photon is coined by Gilbert N. Lewis in a letter to the journal Nature on 18 December 1926.
He was nominated 41 times for Nobel Prize in Chemistry but never won.
